As the world’s leading water experts gather in Abu Dhabi this week for the World Future Energy and International Water Summits, Hansgrohe, the leading manufacturer of bathroom fittings and showerheads, has unveiled how its online savings calculator could help hotels cut energy and water consumption.

The calculator demonstrates the environmental benefits and cost savings offered by Hansgrohe’s pioneering EcoSmart technology. With the hospitality sector set to see double digit growth and capacity in 2013, as the Middle East and Africa region prepares to add 150 new hotels this year*, upgrading fittings to water and energy-saving technology and replacing showerheads with newer water-saving products in hotels could help reduce consumption.

This is an essential technology for the Middle East and in particular the UAE, with Abu Dhabi claiming one of the highest per capita water consumption rate in the world at around 525 – 600 gallons per day. The emirate‘s total consumption of water resources exceeds its natural recharge capacity by 24 times. **

Mixers and showerheads fitted with the EcoSmart technology consume up to 60% less water than conventional products without any loss of comfort. Lower hot water consumption also means a reduced energy requirement, resulting in lower CO2 emissions and lower costs. Sophisticated flow limitation, special spray jets and the mixing of water with air reduce water consumption down to either 6 or 9 l/min depending on the diameter of the shower, while offering lots of shower comfort and saving energy as less water needs to be heated. This means hotel guests’ daily contribution to climate protection can begin under the shower.

An EcoSmart Check package consisting of a measuring cup to determine flow rate, two Hansgrohe aerators to fit onto existing spouts, the Crometta 85 Green hand shower, and an information brochure, can help determine individual savings potential easily.

The Hansgrohe Online Savings Calculator then computes and displays the results for entire hotels, taking into account individual factors such as room occupancy.

Dirk Schilmoeller, Sales Director Middle East for Hansgrohe, said: “The reduction of climate harming CO2 emissions is the responsibility of all members of society. As a leading manufacturer of mixers and showers we are committed to the preservation and purity of water and therefore use it sensibly. The number of environmentally-aware tourists is on the increase as more and more travellers consider their impact on the environment and express a desire to be sustainable. The hotel industry needs to fulfil this desire in order to sustain its future development and we hope that the savings calculator will help make both the hospitality industry and individuals increasingly aware of the value of water.“

Hansgrohe also offers the tool as a version for mobile devices such as smartphones (iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows) and tablets (e.g. iPad, Galaxy Tab).

Hansgrohe’s EcoSmart technology has been installed at the Al Forsan Hotel due for completion this year and The International Shooting Club, Abu Dhabi. It will also be on show in the Eco-Homes at this year‘s World Future Energy Summit (WFES). WFES is the world’s foremost annual event, dedicated to advancing future energy, energy efficiency and clean technologies. Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, WFES includes a world class summit, an international exhibition, the Project & Finance Village, the Young Future Energy Leaders program, corporate meetings and social events.
